Synology DiskStation DS1010+ Upgrade

I got this Synology DS1010+ no disks for $50 and planned for an upgrade to DS1511+. That will make it able to run Docker and consequently Minecraft.

I fckd up! I made a typo in the grub.conf. And the NAS was unable to boot.

I knew the nex step was time consuming so I kinda parked the NAS until I got time to look at it.

So one day my son noticed it and suggested we took off the cover and looked at the ‘damage.

We opened the device and found the onboard (boot) SSD – which is a writable memory IC on a small 1 inch board mounted on top of the motherboard in one of the corners. There are two sockets with memory. 1 on each side of the board. It is not them! You need to unmount the main board to get access. Some of the internal cables should also be unplugged.

LUCKILY the 1 inch board had a connector – think it is a MINI-B usb. Rare, but I had a cable with this connector in one end and a normal big type A USB in the other end. We unmounted that 1 inch board, it is only held by a plastic pin and another connector on the backside. We connected the cable to my Linux server. My guess is you can do it from a PC with SSH (Putty or another SSH utility). Don’t worry abut power. The SSD board gets power via USB. So remove it totally from the Diskstation.

The server actually found the device and using lsblk we got a list of mountable devices. There were two and we mounted them both (create a mountpoint directory first and mount it second). We found the grub.conf in one of the mounts, edited it (in this case we used VI editor), checked it thorougly, saved it and put the Synology NAS together again. Having synology assistent ready was a big help. It can find the drive and IP faster than we can and clicking on the diskstation opens the interface right away.

The DSM actually started! Bbut it couldn’t see the disk so we took it out, put it into my windows PC, destroyed the partition and voila – DiskStation found it after reboot and prompted for the installation file (6.0.3-8754) and it upgraded perfectly. As off now I haven’t run the 6.2.4-25556 update because now I run my Minecraft on a new Dell PowerEdge which of course is much more powerful. But I will try upgrading later anyway.

UPDATE: The 6.2.4-25556 update worked perfectly.

Upgrading to 6.2.4-25556 makes it possible to run Docker and use the NAS as a Minecraft Server
